The Message Behind Our Logo - Our logo represents the branches of the American Larch (larix laricina), also known as Eastern Larch, Hackmatack, Alaska Larch, or Black Larch.  In these parts, it's more popularly known as the Tamarack.  The name 'tamarack' is from the Algonquin word 'akemantak' which means "wood used for snowshoes".  The Tamarack is a tree often found in the Northeast Kingdom.  It is a hearty tree and is distinguished  by the fact that it has deciduous foliage (needles) but drops them in the fall - like leaves.

The Tamarack is our logo because of its unique needle features which suggests that things are not always what they seem.  Also, the wood is particularly heavy and durable with many uses.   Today, its wood is used mainly for pulp, posts, poles and  fuel.  Historically, its roots were used for sewing bark onto canoes and its resin to relieve, of all things,  indigestion.  And, as suggested by the name given it by Native Americans, was found to be particularly suitable for use in snowshoes.

Its delicate seed cones are small, round, red at flowering, turning brown as they age.  The tree turns a beautiful gold after the great maples have passed their prime in the fall when it shines alone in its brilliant color.

Like our BARN,  the Tamarack provides our inspiration.
