Pewter

Crownson’s Pewterware is located in Island Pond , an old New England town  in the northeast corner of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.   Crownson’s selection of historical pewter dates back as far as the fourteenth century and is totally handcrafted by owners Bernard and Kathryn Crownson.

Crownson’s Pewterware uses the same process used by seventeenth century pewterers. It has more strength and durability than its contemporary counterpart which is often referred to as “ spun pewter”.

All of the products are the finest lead-free pewter, leaving no taste on food or drink. Crownson’s Pewterware makes all of their own molds and cast molten pewter into these molds. The solidified pewter is taken from the mold and placed on a turning lathe where it is hand-turned and finished much like you would turn wood.

The Vermont Beaker - Inspired by the work of Ebenezer Southmayed (1802 – 1820 Castleton, VT) (8 oz. & 2 oz. Sizes) — Ebenezer served his apprenticeship in Middletown, Connecticut. He set up his Pewter Shop in Castleton, Vermont in 1802 where he worked until 1820. One of Ebenezer’s beakers is on display in the Winterthur Museum in Delaware, and historians have called his beaker one of the most handsome made in America. Vermont is a special place and the Crownsons wanted to show the rest of the world some of the captivating scenes of Vermont. To this end, there is a selection of hand-engraved scenes of Vermont on this unique beaker.

Windsor Covered Bridge — The Windsor Covered Bridge is the longest covered bridge in the nation. It spans 460 feet across the Connecticut River. First built in 1796,  it has been rebuilt several times, in 1824, 1848 and 1866, due to floods .

Morgan Horse — This si a depiction of the famous  Vermont State Horse.  The first Justin Morgan horse appeared in Randolph, Vermont in 1795. Two horses, a three year-old Mare and a two year-old Bay Stud Colt produced Figure, who after the death of Justin Morgan became known as the Justin Morgan horse.

Sugar Maple Tree — The State Tree, it is the largest and finest of Vermont’s native maples. The sap from this tree is boiled down to produce some of the finest maple syrup in the world. Sap is tapped in early spring. In the fall the leaves from the tree turn a brilliant yellow, orange and red.

Red Clover  — This colorful flower is the State Flower of Vermont. It thrives in the valleys and foothills of Vermont and is the preferred forage of moose, elk and deer.
